He really wishes he could say why they are that way. He types pretty fine and actually quite fast -- even faster when he's mad. But he can't really explain why the keys are in the place that they are. Like, hm. Weird, right? Oh, wait! ]
I believe supposed to be related to how often a key is chosen versus being in alphabetical order. [ I guess. Keyboard classes? Maybe! He doesn't know how he would feel about watching Berkut do the hunt-and-peck method. But he also doesn't think that he'd like to have to have the full keyboard method, either! ]
The way the modern people type is using all five fingers on each hand. But for us, I suppose we will have to type with one key at a time. [ Leaving it open! You want to learn either way! I'll do my best! Probably? ]
[ He supposes that educated guess has merit. Shen Qingqiu's words, however, swirl around in Berkut's mind. Modern? Type? All five fingers? There is this implication of his being old-fashioned and lowbrow, and he doesn't like it. His scowl deepens. ]
Show me how it is done.
[ Well, it sounds like Shen Qingqiu isn't any better off. Berkut will have to take what he can from this lesson. ]
He smiles amicably as he takes the laptop so that he can show what he means. This is going to physically pain me. Oh my god. I'm in pain. Shen Qingqiu smiles through the tears that he is shedding in his heart as he opens up a post just so that he can show how to type. ]
The capslock means that it is or is not capitalized. [ His smile remains as he types with one finger. His eyes slowly become more dead as he demonstrates the hunt and peck method. ]
L [ Death will come for me soon. ] i [ This old man is sorry for all the lies he has ever told! ] k [ Oh my god. ] e [ Please end me. ] s [ Mmm!! ] o.
[ "Like so." Appears on the screen but Shen Qingqiu's soul has transcended to a new plane of existence. ]
[ To be frank, the hunt and peck method looks absolutely stupid, like the teacher has no idea what he's doing. Berkut is fairly certain that this is not how Renne operates the laptop, but that's not important right now.
Berkut's head bobs slightly up and down as he watches Shen Qingqiu pick at the letters. To see the corresponding letters appear on the flat surface before them—his eyes can't help but to widen at this marvelous development. ]
This is . . .
[ Incredible? Most strange? Impressive, to be sure. Shen Qingqiu likened it to a stamp seal, but this is faster by at least a hundredfold! ]
[ Cool, right!! When I first saw it, I was also blown away!
He feels his soul return at hearing the same excitement as he felt. Admit your fault. Admit your fault! Because I can't have you use this method! I can't! If I see you use it, even I'd have to roast you!! ]
And the other way is-- [ Shen Qingqiu sets his hands down on the keyboard and types out much faster -- but also slower than what he usually types due to well, he's not supposed to be well-versed in the computer right? ]
Like this. [ See? ] It really does seem like the keys are arranged by how often they are chosen so once the odd arrangement is memorized, you'll be able to write without even looking.
Now, that looks far better than what Shen Qingqiu was doing earlier. No wasted movements and every key in reach, the hands are positioned with purpose. ]
This appears to be the more practical method. [ He has no idea what that first method was supposed to be, if it even qualifies as one. ] How are the hands placed?
Doesn't it? [ Right, right! He wants to nudge him with his shoulder, but he keeps such actions to himself. If possible, a flower would have bloomed from his head -- in short, he is so happy to bond with Berkut over laptops. I'm sorry. I'm a shut-in that loves these things and happy to show them to you. I wonder if there was an internet... would you have liked cat videos? But then again, who doesn't?
He slides the laptop back. ]
Your left hand fingers should be on the A, S, D, F, and thumb on the spacebar. The right hand should be on J, K, L, and semicolon with the thumb also on the spacebar. [ He happily instructs and instructs which finger should be typing which key. Shen Qingqiu actually has to hold his hands out in front of him as he tries to remember which key is supposed to be typed with which finger, 'cause he is just so used to it that it is second nature. ]
[ How is it easier? He never tried the first method. But he does as instructed, his hands held out awkwardly in front of him. This overall posture is incredibly alien, not to mention the material of the laptop. Still, he hangs onto every word with the utmost attention. ]
What of these other . . . keys?
[ Letters and punctuation marks are easy enough to figure out. Shen Qingqiu told him about the space bar and caps lock as well. There are many more keys that he can see they've yet to go over. ]
[ If Berkut tried the first method, Shizun would have to take the laptop from him and hold it over his head. He would have to. He'd have to stop the prince from being mocked, even if it means hatred. ]
Oh, the other keys. They're also punctuation. Though, most of these you probably won't need to use. Comma, period, question mark, slash... mark. [ Good, please come back. What is that called? ] Colon, semicolon. Apostrophe and quotation marks... Exclamation point.
[ He points them out as he talks about them. Actually... maybe I use more than I actually think I use. Huh!! Shen Qingqiu never really thought of it as he keeps naming them and goes to himself, "I guess I use all of them at one point or another, huh?" ]
The shift key lets you use the symbols written above the other keys. Otherwise, the default is to use the marking already on it.
[ Truly, there is no instructor of the keyboard who is more qualified than Shen Qingqiu. The teacher overflows with personal experience! ]
I see.
[ This is a great deal of information to absorb as someone who's completely new to this technology. He'll have to practice all of this later. There's plenty of time to waste in Chroma, so he has no concerns about that. On the other hand, he can't keep Shen Qingqiu here forever. He'd best be keeping this going while there's more material to cover. ]
[ Right, right? So you see why I get mad when people use the keyboard to write FUCKING GARBAGE! An Ding Peak is going to be charged. He's decided. When he get back, he is charging An Ding Peak one laptop. Fuck it. It's happening! ]
Right. That's just the basics for writing, but the real importance is actually able to see the forum itself. Thankfully, it is only thing one can access so that is simple. [ What would Berkut get stuck on if he had the Internet? Maybe! He would get stuck on sending cute animated greeting cards to his fiancee every day!
Another flower may have come to sprout itself out of Shen Qingqiu's head. ]
So, you can scroll like so, and click ... that is what it means to access the letter and declaration that someone has posted upon the forum to read more of what the person has written and what others have written. And then you can also send a message to the forum or to the forum message itself.
[ I'm not going to let you fall into that trope, Berkut!! ]
The forum itself is an open one, Prince Berkut. It means anyone can post whatever it is that they like. Commoner's thoughts and loftier goals. But it is open for anyone to say anything.
[ Right. I'm saving you from that trope! That trope of someone time traveling to the future and getting mad on the Internet saying, "This isn't the proper way to use the Internet where we can all share ideas and able to access all information." I'm saving you from being roasted by everyone, okay?! ]
[ Somewhere in An Ding Peak, Shang Qinghua sneezes up a lung.
Scroll, click, read more—such simple concepts, yet so new that Berkut stares intensely at the screen in his attempt to keep up. The directions that he mentally runs through a few times come to a grinding halt when Shen Qingqiu speaks again, and he tilts his head with no visible change in his expression.
Maribelle's words about there being no distinction between those of noble and common births come to mind. ]
Exactly what purpose does this forum serve?
[ It can't just be an open canvas for anyone to say anything. No matter who has access, there must be order on some level. ]
He lightly taps his fan against his chin. Like, good question? I used it to air all my grievances about the novel. Loudly. I mean, loud in text form? It's a way to bitch to a whole bunch of people? Wait, scratch that. Talking about the forum that we have here. Right. ]
It is the means for people to talk about what they wish to talk about to the population here. [ How else to put it?? ] Like a royal function with many nobles around? Some would go to corners and gossip, I am assuming? Some would talk about their latest exploits? But some also have serious business to discuss to everyone, or asking for aid?
It is just like that, only through text, because while we can all gather together in one place to do these things, it is uncertain that we'd be able to talk to the people that would be interested in what we are saying.
[ Warmly: ] But I will say that even if something seems foolish that you may want to talk about what that foolish thing is. In short, a place to talk easily for everyone to see, and a place to forge connections. [ Right! I don't want you to just talk about serious things as a prince, but I'd like you to talk about fun things and have a fun time! ]
[ Wait. He pauses as he thinks of the original novel. The novel that got him into the mess of being Shen Qingqiu in the first place. His expression darkens for a second before it lightens and he continues with a bright smile. ]
I feel I am putting restrictions on you, but ... truly, so long as the point is not made that they can't post what they are posting due to the nature of the forum ... you can tell someone honestly and completely that what they wrote is completely stupid due to other reasons.
[ I'm not taking that away from you. So long as you have points outside of that, you are golden! MOTHERFUCKING GOLDEN! TEAR INTO THEM! I understand! If someone writes something stupid and you can't take it! Just lay into them! I feel you and I support you! ]
Just be prepared to be argued with, prince. You won't be able to use your status, but you can tear them apart with logic. [ Like he'd take away the time-honored tradition of flame wars. Yeah, if I told people online I was a rich kid with more money than anyone, they'd just laugh me out the door. That's why you gotta go for the throat instead of your backing! ]
Edited (part got cut off... and redundancy) 2019-02-10 04:28 (UTC)
[ Why would he do that, he wonders. His time, albeit abundant here, is still precious. He'll not waste it on pointless altercations using a forum where everyone cowers behind a strange device. If he must make a point, he shall do it face-to-face.
Nevertheless, Berkut blinks as he points his chin at Shen Qingqiu. ]
I am surprised, Shen Qingqiu. It is rare to hear you disparage someone.
[ In fact, has the teacher ever badmouthed anyone before? He isn't insulting anyone in particular, but to imply that there's content even he could find openly stupid . . . ]
[ What?? Of course, I'm gonna start fights now and again! I'm not some saint! Don't go joining the Saint Shen Qingqiu religion on me now, Berkut! I'm the troublesome escort NPC! He really would rather be seen as the latter than the former. ]
Even I have things that I dislike. [ Hm. Airplane-bro is Airplane-bro. But he wrote fucking garbage and really I finally can talk about it! ] While not on this forum, I came across a story in my world. A person can write whatever they like, of course. A person can tell whatever fictional story that they like, but that does not mean they are free from criticism.
[ He almost blows a puff of air out of his face to push his bangs out of his eyes. But that would be undignified so he only glowers to the side. ] This teacher felt such a headache over what was written that he had to say one or two words to the author's face. Figuratively speaking. We could only argue through our written words.
That is why I cannot denounce someone who grows angry over what someone has written and say that it is best to say something than nothing.
[ Oh, no. Peace-loving though he may be, Shen Qingqiu is a troublesome person in that he's meddlesome and garrulous. There are no illusions about that. In retrospect, Berkut shouldn't be surprised by the realization that this teacher is quite opinionated.
In any case, why bother if the story was that egregious? It'd be simpler to put the text down and never look at it again. Berkut reminds himself that he and Shen Qingqiu are very different in many ways. He hums in passing thought. ]
As a scholar, I suppose it is natural for you to have words about certain literature.
Motherfucker needs to learn what trouble he gives others! I paid for that! I paid for early chapter releases, Berkut! Do you understand what it's like to give money to someone just so that they can spit in your fucking face? Do you? Fuck.
But Airplane is still his transmigrated bro.
Shen Qingqiu looks away.
Airplane is still his transmigrated bro.
Shen Qingqiu looks up at the ceiling.
Airplane did help him get the Sun and Moon Flower Seed.
He looks back to Berkut. ]
Yes. The writing may have made me upset but the author is someone that I came to like. So while I cannot defend what he has written, I can say the person is all right.
[ He doesn't understand, but it does look to him like Shen Qingqiu is having something of a minor crisis. Ah, the priorities of a general and a scholar truly differ. ]
And you are advising that I take the same approach to this forum. [ He snorts. Like he'd bother with anything that isn't worth his time—and there is exceeding little in Chroma that is. ] Well, that shall depend on what I find.
[ Idly, he thinks he should also charge An Ding Peak for what he paid for early access chapters. FUCKING GIVING ME BACK MY MONEY!! But even he realizes that is too petty. He paid for it and so he can't ask for that back. The laptop, however, deserves to repayment. It suffered the most in the end.
With those thoughts sorted, he finally smiles. ]
I suppose that it will. I hope that you find something fun or at least useful in it.
[ Is he sweating? Maybe? A little?? He hasn't forgotten the backlog and can only hope he won't have that flag plucked so soon. ]
Oh, one last thing! Everyone has ... pseudonyms. [ I almost said IDs! ] It's a code of some sort. But you can use that code to send that specific person a message. Like sending a letter straight to their door. So, if you really feel heated about something but don't want other people to read your heated words, you can always just send them a message that way.
[ I can't not give this option to you. But also!! ] But also, you can just talk to anyone that way. It is, as I said, like penning a letter specifically to one person rather than upon the open forum where all can see.
[ Pseudonyms. Berkut turns back to the screen. Whatever for? It only adds an element of uncertainty, because anyone can pretend to be someone with a few pretty lies—and that makes him wonder. ]
Is this form of correspondence so secure?
[ Because he is unfamiliar with the technology behind these computers, he has no way of knowing how reliable these things are. Convenient, yes. Should sensitive material be transferred through these? Likely not.
And why this fixation on the possibility of his going after someone for what they wrote? Does Berkut strike Shen Qingqiu as the type to be that uninhibited? ]
[ He almost tilts his head as he doesn't quite understand the question. Secure in what way? Um??
Opening his mouth, he is about to give some answer before he shakes his head. I can't answer if I don't understand, and I don't want to just give some nice response. ]
I don't understand the question. Secure? In what way do you mean?
[ Does that indirectly mean that it is, or is it the opposite? Or is Berkut understanding this all wrong? That embarrassing possibility is also there. ]
Messengers can be intercepted by prying eyes. Is the same possible on the forum?
He offers a few small nods as he gets what Berkut is worried about. Good question! I mean, any e-mail can be hacked, but this isn't really an e-mail so there isn't any e-mail to hack. Okay, hold up. I'm gonna confuse him if I get into all of that, so let's just break it down! ]
On the forum itself, anyone can read what you write so it is not secure. It is like posting what you are writing upon a bulletin board. [ The last two words are spoken somewhat hesitantly. That something you have? I am thinking of like those boards people put like WARRANT ROBIN HOOD KICK HIS ASS. Are they called bulletin boards? ... help. ]
Messages sent to the inboxes are secure from prying eyes. However, you are right, like with messengers being intercepted... if either laptop is grabbed, so too could all messages be seen.
But here's the positive to that, Prince Berkut! The laptops themselves cannot work too far from the home you have been designated. Which means if they are going to read whatever you wrote, they going to most likely be in your or the other person's domicile. [ Get it? Even if someone happens to want to read what you wrote, there's a good possibility that you'd be able to catch them! ]
